Why Drainage Is Critical to Your Landscape

Proper drainage is an essential, though often overlooked, aspect of landscape design. It is the unsung hero that protects your outdoor investment. Without it, even the most stunning landscapes can succumb to the detrimental effects of excess water. Pooled water can lead to slippery surfaces, weaken planting roots, and even compromise the integrity of paved areas.

Assessing Your Landscape's Drainage Needs

A thorough assessment of your landscape's current drainage situation is the first step towards a sustainable design. This includes analyzing soil composition, topography, and existing runoff patterns. Identifying low spots and natural collection points helps in creating a strategic plan to manage water effectively throughout your property.

Implementing Solutions: From Simple to Complex

Drainage solutions range from simple interventions, like adjusting the slope of the land, to more complex systems involving French drains, catch basins, or dry wells. Each solution is tailored to address specific challenges within your landscape, ensuring that water is directed away from critical areas efficiently and discreetly.

Integrating Drainage into Aesthetic Design

Drainage elements don't have to detract from the beauty of your landscape. Creative design integrates functional drainage into the overall aesthetic, using decorative grates, natural stone, or even incorporating rain gardens that turn runoff into a resource for stunning, water-loving plantings.

The Role of Features in Drainage

Features like retaining walls and paver walkways play a pivotal role in managing water flow. Permeable paving materials allow water to seep through and enter the subsoil gradually, reducing runoff and the burden on your drainage system. Retaining walls can act as barriers that prevent soil erosion and manage water course.

French Drains: The Subterranean Solution

French drains are the go-to solution for areas in your lawn that tend to become waterlogged. These underground trenches filled with gravel or rock contain a perforated pipe that redirects groundwater away from your landscape, keeping it dry and lush.

Downspout Drains: Directing Water with Precision

Downspout drains are vital in ensuring that the water from your gutters is channeled away from your property's foundation. These pipes, attached to the bottom of downspouts, run underground and safely discharge the water to an appropriate outlet location, protecting your landscape from erosion and your building from water damage.

Catch Basins: Surface Water Management

Catch basins are essential for collecting surface water overflows. They vary in size, from small 4-inch diameter basins suitable for modest landscapes to larger 2-foot squares for more expansive landscapes, ensuring that even during heavy downpours, water is effectively captured and conveyed away.

Partnering with a Drainage Expert

To achieve the best results, it's advisable to work with a landscape design and build contractor who specializes in drainage solutions. Their expertise ensures that every aspect of your landscape's drainage is considered, from initial design to installation, with a focus on long-term effectiveness and sustainability.

About the Author

It was in the early 1970s that Phil Munro was introduced to the landscape industry. His dad, Don Munro, purchased a dump truck to deliver materials and install small landscape jobs when he had free time after work and on the weekends, and he’d bring Phil along with him. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1980s, Phil built on this experience to start Munro Landscaping in 1987. In 1991, he incorporated as Munro’s Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance. Over the years he developed many relationships with suppliers and builders, and the company experienced massive growth: It expanded the lawn division and started a landscape construction division in the ’90s.
